Digital Camera Memory Cards - Essential kit for today's high tech cameras

Equivalent to rolls of film that are used in traditional cameras and therefore commonly called digital film, the Digital Camera Memory Card has become an essential piece of storage kit for users of digital cameras. In fact, most types of digital camera would be rendered useless if a memory card were not available to be placed inside the camera in order to store captured images.

Digital camera technology has advanced dramatically over the last few years, this has meant that support devices, such as memory cards have also had to advance at a similar pace. Manufacturers of digital memory cards are now in hot competition with each other and this has led to rapid development of better, faster and higher capacity cards entering the marketplace at increasingly frequent intervals.

No need to buy rolls of film for your digital camera! A single memory card may be all you ever need

Not like rolls of film that can be used only once, memory cards can be used over and over again to store pictures that have been captured with the host device. Furthermore, unlike traditional film, unwanted photos can be deleted whilst the memory card is still inside the digital camera in order to make space for more images. Financially speaking, the eventual savings compared to the buying and developing traditional film are naturally enormous and will continue to increase the more times that the card is used.

Another benefit is that a medium to high capacity camera flash card, of say 256MB or 512MB, is able to store many more photos than a film can. In some cases the amount may number more than 1000 images! However this will depend on the resolution of the photos and the quality setting that they were taken at.

As soon as the card becomes full of digital photos, that is its storage capacity has been reached, it can be connected to a computer and the images transferred in order to free up the cards memory so that it can be used again in the digital camera. It should be said that reusing the memory card in this way does not affect the quality of the images that are stored on it. Users can write and erase as many times as they want with absolutely no loss of quality!

The uploading of files to a computer can be accomplished in several ways, the most popular being to either connect the camera directly to the computer via a USB port and cable with the memory card still inside the digital camera. Another way is to remove the card from the host and then slot it into a memory card reader. The latter tends to be the most favored method as it allows the user to conserve the battery power of the host camera. Some cameras now incorporate wireless technology which allows the transfer of files without the need to physically connect the digital camera to a computer, though these still tend to be at the more expensive end of the scale.

Usually, the memory card shipped with a new digital camera will just be a 'starter' card with minimal storage ability

Manufacturers usually ship new digital cameras with a 'starter memory card' of just 16 or 32 MB. Given that current mainstream models of digital camera may have five or six megapixels,  such low capacity camera cards may only be able to store several images. Some consumers needs are for greater storage capacities and it is this that has led to a massive increase in the after sales market for memory cards of 256MB, 512MB or much more.

With high megapixel counts, meaning that a digital camera image will use up more megabytes when stored as a file, digital camera card memory is now available, in some formats, with capacities of up to a whopping 12 gigabytes! Consumers should however be aware that not all digital cameras are capable of working with such high capacity memory cards and should therefore consult their product manual in order to ascertain whether or not such a card will be compatible with their device.

Another important aspect to consider is the speed rating of the camera  memory cards. Though some do have a high speed rating, there are cameras that will be unable to write at a velocity that is greater than they were designed for. Therefore, consumers should be sure to check their device specifications before forking out substantially more for a faster card.
