SanDisk TransFlash™ / microSD - Secure Digital Memory in an Extremely Small Package

This new format was officially introduced in mid 2005 by SanDisk® under the name "TransFlash" as yet another ultra small brother of the SD card. Shortly after its introduction the SD Association officially adopted the format and the name was changed to microSD, in line with the rest of the Secure Digital flash memory range.

microSD - TransFlash Card

Although minute in size at 15mm x 11mm x 1mm (the original Secure Digital card is some four times larger) the MicroSD provides a reliable, secure and robust digital memory solution for owners of small electronic gadgetry such as MP3 players and Cellular Phones. Such devices continue to get smaller to the extent that many of them are completely incapable of accommodating some of the early memory card types despite their own relatively miniscule size.

Micro SD cards are currently available in the following storage capacities: 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1GB, plus SanDisk has plans to launch a 2GB microSD in early 2006 too. Such a choice should keep gadget freaks and electronic memory munching device owners happy and provide them with the ability to write and store bags of data such as images, music & video files, personal data and much more with ease. Handy adapters are supplied with the cards that will also allow them to be used in devices that accept only the larger, original sized, Secure Digital memory.

Micro Secure Digital cards have already found favor amongst numerous electronic manufacturers and many have been quick to incorporate them into their ever expanding range of removable memory dependent products, as such, you can expect this to be a format that will be with us for the long term.
