MMC Memory Card, a good all round multimedia memory format

MMC memory cards, or MultiMedia Card's are a reliable and durable memory format. In keeping with other types of flash storage they are small and therefore convenient to use. The actual dimensions are 32mm x 24mm x 1.4mm and it weighs in at less than two grams.

Compatible with a wide array of consumer electronic equipment, like cell phones, personal digital assistants (PDA's), cameras, portable game machines and MP3 players, MMC memory cards are a storage format widely supported by electronics manufacturers.

The higher capacity MMC memory storage card will soon be with us!

At the time of writing this article, the highest available MMC card capacity  was 1GB, but most of the main manufacturers were producing them with only 128MB. Of course, this may well be ample for many users depending on the type of host device they are using. However, some consumers may well require a higher memory capacity card, which it is hoped will become more widely available in the not too distant future. Given that this format is relatively cheap, another option is to simply purchase more than one card.

An added advantage of MMC memory is that it can be accommodated, and used, by almost all devices that have an SD slot. This is a major plus and is thus bound to ensure the longevity of this popular format. Additionally, adapters are available that enable users to insert an MMC card into them and then in turn slot them into any device with a PCMCIA slot.

Just about no memory card wear and tear with the MMC

With no mechanical parts, there is nothing to wear out inside of MMC cards meaning that it is highly practical as a long term and reliable companion for any compatible equipment that you may own either now, or in the future. Moreover, power consumption is extremely low and therefore the drain on the power supply of the host device is minimal. For clarity, it should be pointed out that this format, as with other flash types, has no on board power source and instead relies on the device that it is inserted into to provide its power needs. However, removing it from its host, effectively cutting off its power, does not mean that any data will be lost. It is all retained and ready to be accessed again when reinserted.

To conclude, if you need digital storage that provides good performance in a small package, one that is compatible with a wide range of consumer devices and isn't going to become obsolete any time soon, then the MMC memory card is the one for you!
